SUMMER FISHIN' IS SIZZLIN' IN THE OBX

Summer is ushered in by the arrival of Cobia on their northerly migration from the  Gulf of Mexico in late May or early June . These 20-100# beasts can be caught from piers but mostly by sight casting or chumming from boats in the nearshore tide lines. Spanish Mackeral, Bluefish, and a variety of bottom fish like Croakers and Spot reward surf and boat anglers alike throughout the summer.

In the Croatan, Roanoke, Albemarle and Pamlico sounds structures such as bridges, creeks mouths, marsh islands, and stumpy shorelines hold large numbers of very nice sized Flounder, Speckled Trout and Puppy Drum. This year we have seen impressive Specs as a result of a relatively mild winter and favorable water salinity in the sounds.

So far, gulf stream fishing has been exceptionally good. Early June yielded huge numbers of large (gaffer) Dolphins, know by some folks as Mahi-Mahi. Big Eye and Yellowfin Tuna have been much more abundant than last season.  Numerous Blue Marlin and Wahoos have also been reported.

So far 2009 if off to a terrific start.
Summer is a great time to fish in the Outer Banks whether on the beach, on a kayak, in a center console or aboard a 50' sportfisher. The Outer Banks Fishing School is ready to help you get hooked up!
